Introduction to the Master’s Degree in Production Direction and Improvement of Industrial Processes

The Master’s Degree in Production Direction and Improvement of Industrial Processes from OBS Business School is particularly focused on planning resources, defining a good industrial organisation strategy and the innovation of product and productive processes. Additionally, throughout the programme, different ways of managing changes will be studied through projects that focus on the monitoring and control of production and the development of management competencies.

Syllabus of the Master’s Degree in Production Direction
The programme is divided into 6 blocks and the completion of a Final Project. The blocks are as follows:
- Basic Concepts of Supply Chain and Demand Management: Demand management and planning of resources; Management of the supply chain.
- Operational Strategy and Management Methodologies: Operational strategy and Lean Manufacturing, Techniques for process improvement and Quick Response Manufacturing; Total Quality Management and Advanced Project Management.
- Innovation: Innovation and Product engineering.
- Monitoring and Control: Programming and control of Production; Finances of Industrial Operations.
- Organisations and Peolpe: Organisational systems, management of teams and leadership skills.
- Management of Multicultural Productive Environments: Plant management and international purchases. Management in multicultural environments.
Block 1: Basic Concepts of Supply Chain and Demand Management
> Demand Management and Planning of Resources
This module will deal with the ERP, MRP and MRPII management systems; Demand modelling, which are the classification of the criteria of demand, demand forecast, quality contrasting of forecasts (forecast accuracy), updating of models and follow-up of forecast exceptions; Sales & Operations planning; Master scheduling and Distribution planning.
> Supply Chain Management (SCM)
The items dealt with in this module are: strategy in SCM (purchase or produce?); where and how to do it, strategic offshoring, outsourcing vs. insourcing; purchase and supply management according to demand and its management, as well as ABC/XYZ classification systems; types of value chains (Lean vs Agile Supply Chain); integration in supply chain (e-logistics); identification and optimisation of bottlenecks in the chain (theory of constraints, TOC); introduction to innovation management.
Block 2: Operational Strategy and Management Methodologies
> Operational strategy and Lean Manufacturing (LM)
We will talk about operational strategies (cost, differentiation and concentration); the Two winning two qualifying criteria framework of Terry Him, winner strategy and critical factors; management indicators of an industrial plant (KPI) depending on winning factors; command of an industrial plant (winning factors, KPI, frequency and scope); operational strategies according to product lifecycle and according to demand (variety, forecast and production systems — MTO, MTS, ETC, etc.); optimisation methodologies of industrial plants (operations compass); Industrial Competitiveness Index (INCO-I) and profile of the student’s company; principles of Lean (value, continuous flow and pull from customer; the 8 wastes). We will also work on stabilisation (5S, TPM) & Standardisation; Just in Time; the 0 defects of Jidoka; Kaizen & Kata activities; optimisation of machinery setup by means of the SMED system; half-year project (Cociprix Case).
> Techniques for process improvement and Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM)
In this section we will work on the analysis of value through processes (VSM); optimisation of machinery setup by means of the SMED system (TPM introduction); basic principles of agile systems and types of demand, the 4 QRM pillars, concepts and practical cases; agile systems in administrative and office environments; systems dynamics (usage according to demand, queuing theory, etc.); manufacturing critical-path time (MCT).
> Total Quality Management (TQM) and Advanced Project Management
Which subjects will be covered in this module? The Total Quality Management (TQM), EFQM standard and self-assessment; Six Sigma; complete DMAIC process; quality function deployment (QFD); some Quality tools such as AMFE, Pareto, Ishikawa, Anova, etc.; continuous improvement management; introduction to the project concept (the three limitations, knowledge, personality and project leader’s skills, management of interested parties and risks); introduction to general methodologies (PMBOK and PRINCE2); tools and techniques for project management, the Critical Path Method, the Goldratt’s Critical Chain Method, the Montecarlo method; the ISO21500 methodology for project management, areas of knowledge, processes, production of a practical case; Microsoft Project as a basic tool and usage of the PROMAN simulator in the resolution of two practical cases (Policlínica and ESAR); the layouts simulator (SIMIO Software).
Block 3: Innovation
> Innovation and Product engineering
We acquire knowledge of the design and development of new products, concurrent engineering vs. AGILE, concept to customer; value analysis (product development, lifecycle, functional analysis, FAST diagram); product innovation through Design Thinking and User-driven Innovation; tools to strengthen creativity and generation of ideas (SCAMPER, Concept Tree, Morphological Matrix).
Block 4: Monitoring and Control
> Programming and control of Production
In the programming and control of Production module we will discuss production planning systems according to management systems (TOC system, QRM system, Lean Heijunka system); push vs. pull systems and types (kanban, conWIP, POLCA & DBR); classic productivity control systems and cases according to sector and their applications, methods and times (MTM 1&2), systems SCADA, MES, ANDON, etc.
> Finances of Industrial Operations
At this point we will see how to analyse financial statements, the economic-financial situation of a company through rations and financing needs; we will discuss investments, the consideration of the value of money in key analysis criteria (liquidity, performance), static and dynamic methods of assessing their profitability; we will deal with cost assignment systems (Full, Direct, ABC, Lean & Agile); we will assess investments (Payback) & Stocks (intangible costs, value of money/cost of opportunity).
Block 5: Organisations and People
> Organisational systems, management of teams and leadership skills
The key items of this module are: the company and its organisation; organisational systems, verticality and centralised grades, management by processes, management by projects, matrixes by workgroups…; the HOFSTEDE test; revolutionary management systems (“Irizar” and “Semco” systems); values in the company; ethics by values; prevention of occupational risks, healthy working environments; corporate social responsibility (CSR); profile management (DISC system); director’s skills and competences development; affective leadership and talent management; grade of motivation and emotions management; powerful relationships; foreseeing change; thinking differently; new challenges.
Block 6: Management of Multicultural Productive Environments
> Plant management and international purchases. Management in multicultural environments
We will deal with the management of industrial plants in Asia, Africa, Europe, South and Central America and the International Law of intellectual and industrial property of patents.
Final Master’s Degree Project: Production and Innovation Management Project
The programme converges in a final project related to the management of production and innovation. It can be an improvement project, an innovation project or a management project that provides solutions to existing problems.

The people who pass the programme evaluation and comply with the academic requirements, established by the University of Barcelona (UB), will receive a UB qualification.
In order to obtain a UB qualification, you need to have a University Degree (Engineer’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree for four years or Bachelor’s Degree for three years). If you do not have a University Degree, once you have passed the different evaluations you will receive an extension diploma from UB.
